KNOLL Automation at COMPAMED 2026, November 16–19 in Düsseldorf:

The new Handling Head: The gripper system for high system availability in medical technology

The new Handling Head is currently being prepared for integration into KNOLL Automation’s solutions. From 2027, the universal assembly gripper will gradually replace the previous generation. The new version is specifically designed to meet the requirements of high-availability production systems in medical technology. Its robust design, precision and maintenance-friendly construction support reliable 24/7 operation and high system availability.

The Handling Head is suitable for a wide range of assembly and joining tasks. Like the proven predecessor, it is fully electric and equipped with two grippers and a linear guide, all driven by high-quality servomotors. The optimised housing contains the mechanical and electronic components and protects the surrounding environment from particle emissions. Its enclosed design makes cleaning easy, while the gripper system is highly resistant to all commonly used cleaning agents. This makes the Handling Head particularly well suited to robust 24/7 operation in medical technology manufacturing and cleanroom environments.

Quick change for minimal downtime

Despite the use of high-quality components that are deliberately sourced through short supply chains, these parts are still subject to wear as part of a heavily used 24/7 system and may fail after many operating hours. For high-availability production systems, ease of maintenance is therefore just as important as reliability. The new quick-change concept allows the Handling Head to be replaced in just a few simple steps: loosen the screws, remove the Handling Head, fit the replacement Handling Head onto the robot quill, retighten the screws, and the system is ready to run again.
To enable this, the KNOLL Automation development team has integrated mechanical, electrical and control interfaces into the quick-change adapter. “For our customers, precision, reliability, maximum OEE and minimal downtime are all top priorities,” says Bernd Hirzler, Product Manager at KNOLL Automation. “In larger systems, up to 20 Handling Heads can be used at the same time. This clearly shows the extent to which the new quick-change system can have a direct positive impact on OEE.”

The robust design, precision and maintenance-friendly construction of KNOLL Automation’s Handling Head support reliable 24/7 operation and high system availability.

Tailored service and maintenance

KNOLL Automation’s service and maintenance concept helps ensure reliable system operation. Individually tailored Service Level Agreements define the scope of services. Depending on the operator’s service setup, maintenance can either be carried out by KNOLL or by the customer’s own service team using a dedicated service and maintenance station developed specifically for the Handling Head. “Just like our systems, our service is tailored to the requirements of each customer,” says Benedikt Tröscher, Head of Service at KNOLL Automation.

Process monitoring

The new Handling Head enables continuous digital monitoring of relevant assembly and joining processes. Process data can be visualised, stored and documented for further analysis. The motor current data from the servomotors can be used to generate a characteristic signature for assembly processes, which can then be used to determine the process window for successful assembly. This allows deviations to be detected at an early stage, supporting process reliability, quality and system availability.

From 16 to 19 November 2026, KNOLL Automation will present the new Handling Head at COMPAMED in Düsseldorf. The team will be available for questions and discussions at Stand L36 (Hall 8B). For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact: sales@knoll-feinmechanik.de
